In this post I will show you the basics of subtitle editing, give some hopefully helpful points at the beginning and suggest a different program for editing subtitles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Getting started<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> If you are working with Davinci on a laptop, get yourself a blue tooth mouse. It is easier to click precisely. Davinci uses a lot of CPU. Meaning it will crash at some point if it is run on a laptop. Because it is using this much  CPU the video will probably stutter when you&#8217;re playing it in Davinci. This is normal and not a malfuntion. The more you edit, the more likely is the stuttering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.1 The good news is: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Davinci is a non-distructive programm. If you want to reverse your actions just press STRG+Z.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-There are a lot of free tutorials on YouTube and most of the time you will find problem solutions quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s start with the basics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have seven panes in which you can work on different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the little symbols at the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From left to right they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>media (this is where your media is shown basically)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cut (mostly used for cutting but you can do that in the edit pane as well)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>edit ( where you will work most of the time generally)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fusion (you can remove greenscrens here)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>color (you can remove greenscreens here but much easier and better)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fairlight (this is where you can correct audio)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>deliver (this is where you can produce your videos)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our purposes (which is mostly putting subtitles into videos) we are interested in two of them: \u201eEdit\u201c and \u201eDeliver\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click on the \u201eedit\u201c pane button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/Bild_2022-12-15_144432141-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/Bild_2022-12-15_144432141-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/Bild_2022-12-15_144432141-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/Bild_2022-12-15_144432141-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/Bild_2022-12-15_144432141-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/Bild_2022-12-15_144432141.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, what you see is still an empty project. But we obviously want to import some files so, how do we do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use the easy way and press STRG+I on your Laptop keyboard (sometimes it is CTRL+I &#8211; that varies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you use the menu: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go to File. Choose Import. Always play the video to check if it is working correctly. Press \u201espace\u201c to start the video and press it again to stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Editing Subtitles<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above \u201eVideo 1\u201c there is a free space. When it shows two brackets keep left mouse button pressed. Drag them to the side you want the subtitle track to extend to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s easier if you zoom in on the timeline. This will take you some time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. A suggestion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A suggestion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to suggest editing subtitles with SubtitleEdit. The reasoning behind this is: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. it would safe us time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. we can seperatly safe the subtitle file<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. it is much more comfortable<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subtitle Edit is opensource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefits of it are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; You can import full text <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">File &#8211;&gt;import plain text<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 SE will show you which lines are too long (it marks them red). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 you can drag and drop the video into the program<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 you have a big audio line. Visualization is very helpful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 you can almost entirely manage the program with shortcuts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 you can adjust the subtitle length a lot more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 colour changing is manageable by clicking right on your mouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 you have a lot of data formats you can save it under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/SUBTITLE-EDIT-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/SUBTITLE-EDIT-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/SUBTITLE-EDIT-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/SUBTITLE-EDIT-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/SUBTITLE-EDIT-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.phil.hhu.de\/ctsdus\/files\/2022\/12\/SUBTITLE-EDIT.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Final Steps<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you have finished the project in SE you can save it as .srt file and drag this file into your Davinci project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place the .srt file into subtitle timeline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the subtitles are there now. You can import them as a &#8216;separate file&#8217; too.
