I just attended my first university lesson on TEI &amp; XML and I must say, it\u2019s not just about codes and brackets. It\u2019s like unveiling a secret language behind digital humanities! Let\u2019s dive in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what\u2019s the difference between TEI &amp; XML?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a language that defines rules for encoding documents in a format readable by both machines and humans. On the other hand, TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) is a standard for representing texts in digital form, which uses XML as its basis. Think of XML as the foundational framework, and TEI as a specific application of it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is this important for our project?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With TEI &amp; XML, we can structure, store, and analyze textual data in a standardized way, ensuring that our work remains interoperable and understandable in the world of digital humanities. So, if we\u2019re collaborating or sharing our work, it\u2019s going to be super handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alright, what about metadata?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The header of a TEI file contains metadata. This is basically like the ID card of a document, giving detailed information about it, such as the title, author, publisher, and more. Basically, it helps people (and machines) understand the context and specifics of the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deep dive into TEI structure: From my notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:1\">\n<li>TEI File: It consists of two major parts:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Header: Contains the metadata (more on this soon).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Body (Text): The main content of your electronic text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nodes: Remember the family tree? Think of mother nodes as parents and child nodes as their children. It\u2019s a hierarchy!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mandatory Elements in the Header:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(File Description): The most important section! It has:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&lt;titleStmt&gt;<\/em>: Here we mention the title, author, editor, and others who contributed to the electronic text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;respStmt&gt;<\/em>: This is where you give credit by encoding responsibilities. For example, who did what.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;pubStmt&gt;<\/em>: Information about the publisher, publication status, address, availability, and date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;sourceDesc&gt;<\/em>: This is a tricky one. It&#8217;s about the bibliographic source, NOT the actual one. For our purposes, think title, storyteller, and translator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\" style=\"list-style-type:1\">\n<li><em>&lt;encodingDesc&gt;<\/em>: Gives a low-down on the editorial practices, project description, and other technical details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;profileDesc<strong>&gt;<\/strong><\/em>: A spotlight on non-bibliographic info. It tells about the creation of the text, the languages used, and details about the ACTUAL source.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&lt;body&gt; Basics:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&lt;div&gt;<\/em>: Think of it as the boundaries for sections, chapters, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;head&gt;<\/em>: For titles and subtitles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;p&gt;<\/em>: Good old paragraphs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;q&gt;<\/em>: Spoken words or quotes. Ready for some drama!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&lt;l&gt;<\/em>: For those poetic souls, this represents lines in poems and songs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember the sample code mistake I mentioned? Well, it&#8217;s always good to cross-check codes. Little nuances can make a huge difference in the digital realm!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a wrap for today!
